In terms of architecture, the city inherits a great number of historical monuments. In fact the entire set of buildings in the center and including the districts "Iosefin" and "Fabric" are considered historical monuments. This is the result of a long tradition of modern urban planning, started in the eighteenth century, with the arrival of the Austrians.

The buildings were well aligned and the buildings from the  corner of the streets had to have additional architectural elements. Dominant was the  Baroque style of Viennese influence, which brought Timisoara the name "Little Vienna".

In the late nineteenth century, urban structure of Timisoara underwent a comprehensive modernization process. Fortresses and military facilities were demolished and replaced by boulevards and new districts. In 1904, the Town Hall established a new role that of chief architect which was later assigned to the young architect László Székely. He made a decisive contribution to reshaping the central area and the introduction of Art Nouveau Secession and eclectic urban landscape of the city.

Nevertheless, the "Fabric" and "Iosefin" districts have kept some evidence of ethnic diversity. The buildings do not exceed two floors are brightly colored and very richly decorated.
